The big 3 (MS, Oracle, IBM) chose Hybrid Relational/XML as a plan.  Ron
Bourret has some categories on his site

data on this as well.
I have always been of two minds when someone says Native XML Database.  The
first mind is suspicous - show me the features - the trueness to XQuery and
Xml DM.  The second mind is that if you set out to be "native" you will have
less artifacts of being non native.

Our company moved the other direction - from native XML to relational.  This
was mostly due to the cost effectiveness of relational and the fact that if
we wanted XQuery we could get it for free from IBM DB2 Express.

Sure. Companies that have made that switch are appropriate for my list.

Companies that by-passed RDBMS and went straight to XML database would be
appropriate for my list.

Do you know of companies that have opted for XML databases instead of free
text databases, document management systems, operating systems filestores,
or object databases?
