The W3C membership fees are definitely an issue for smaller companies (or 
micro companies if you prefer).  Basically it amounts to all employees 
taking a significant pay cut to join W3C!

And personally I don't think I consider myself sufficiently expert to 
contemplate becoming an invited expert.  Maybe the W3C needs the idea of an 
'invited dogs body!'  Someone who does the equivalent of stacking the chairs 
at the ends of meetings!
