I don't see what this has to do with whether browsers are an open platform. Surely doing XML stuff isn't the definition of "open platform".

It's unlikely that those technologies would be incorporated in the HTML5 spec under any circumstances. The trend is splitting stuff out of HTML5 instead of adding unrelated stuff.
