Re: [xml-dev] RE: The use of URLs in the XML technologies to reference external resources

Roger,

Apologies for this reply being very, very late.

You obviously did not cite all "XML technologies" (e.g., XQuery isn't mentioned), but that would be difficult at best anyway.

Some omissions from even the last version of your list:

* In XPath 3, URI qualified names
  URIQualifiedName    ::=    URILiteral ":" NCName

* In XPath 2 and beyond, collations
   ("collation" URILiteral)

* In XPath 2 and beyond, the document-uri() function returns a URI

* In XPath 2 and beyond, the uri-collection() function returns a sequence of URIs

* In XPath 2 and beyond, the namespace-uri() function returns a URI

* In XPath 2 and beyond, the namespace-uri-for-prefix() function returns a URI

* In XPath 2 and beyond, the namespace-uri-from-QName() function returns a URI

* In XPath 3, the unparsed-text() function accepts a URI argument

* In XQuery 3 (in case you want to include this language), URIs are used in several places within query prologs:
  - namespace declarations, including module namespace declarations and default namespace declarations
  - option declarations (e.g., serialization options "output" and "parameter-document")
  - default collation declarations
  - base URI declarations
  - schema import declarations
  - module import declarations

* In XQuery 3 (in case you want to include this language), URIs are used in constructors of various sorts

Hope this helps,
   Jim

Hi Folks,

Ken Holman sent me some corrections and additions. Here's the updated version. Thanks Ken!   /Roger

The XML technologies use URLs to reference external resources. For example, XML Schema uses a URL in the <xs:include> and <xs:import> elements to reference other XML Schema documents.

The below list shows several XML technologies  and where they use URLs. Please let me know if I have missed any place where URLs are used in these technologies to reference external resources.  /Roger

-----------------------------------------
XML
-----------------------------------------

1. The <!ENTITY> external entity

2. The SYSTEM url in a <!DOCTYPE> declaration

-----------------------------------------
XML Schema
-----------------------------------------

1. The <xs:include> element

2. The <xs:import> element

3. The <xs:redefine> element

4. The xsi:schemaLocation attribute

5. The xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation attribute

-----------------------------------------
XSLT
-----------------------------------------

1. The document() function

2. The <xsl:include> element

3. The <xsl:import> element

4. The <?xml-stylesheet> PI

5. The <xsl:import-schema> element

6. The unparsed-text() function

7. The unparsed-text-available() function

8. The <xsl:result-document> element

9. All the XPath functions listed below

-----------------------------------------
XPath
-----------------------------------------

1. The doc() function

2. The collection() function

3. The base-uri() function

4. The doc-available() function

Schematron

1. The <sch:include> element

2. All the XPath functions listed above
