Also in German, you can avoid diacritics just by using e.g. waehrung instead of währung. Even the Esszett can be rendered "ss" for these purposes.

To avoid such issues completely, and save file size, tag and attribute names are often coded, e.g. in ONIX for Books you can find the same tag as <x447> and <PublisherIDType> in the two (otherwise identical) XSDs.
