Graphical mapping tools

Dear colleagues,

what is the state of the art concerning graphical mapping tools? (I mean tools which are based on graphical representations of source and target tree and let the user draw connections.)

Have you positive or negative experience? Are there products which enable non-trivial mappings without hand-editing the generated code? Do some tools offer a documentation of the internal representation of the mapping, thus enabling programmatic construction of mapping definitions? Can someone point to work which relates graphical mapping tools to the more abstract notion of a declarative definition of transformation?

Thank you for any information or remarks.

With kind regards,
Hans-Jürgen Rennau
