I'm not entirely sure that's true. Programmers certainly blew their
chances — XML was being pushed for circumstances unsuited to its
position in life, and programmers were dismayed to find that it wasn't a
programming language per se; that there was no compiler which produced a
binary executable. Don't forget this was in a time when markup was
largely a non-existent concept in most CS courses (still is in some
places), so when you explained that they shouldn't expect to be able to
execute a novel, you just got blank stares. Not entirely their fault:
they just want to be able to write programs, and unless those programs
were going to need to open up text documents, XML really wasn't a
candidate, and should not have been touted as one.
