JoAnn T. Hackos, PhD President Comtech Services Inc. 710 Kipling Street, Suite 400 Denver, CO 80215 303-232-7586 CIDM will be hosting the Content Management Strategies/DITA Europe 2014 conference in Munich, Germany November 18-19. More information at: http://www.infomanagementcenter.com/DITAeurope/2014/index.htm From: Autumn Cuellar <> Date: Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 10:32 AM To: JoAnn Hackos <>, Stan Doherty <> Subject: Proposed outline: MathML DITA 1.3 Whitepaper Hello, Here is what I’m considering for the paper: Working Title: Making the Most of the New Math Specializations in DITA 1.3 1. Introduction a. Two separate but related specializations i. MathML ii. Equation 2. MathML a. Advantages i. XML advantages 1. Style separate from content 2. Localization 3. Re-use ii. Accessibility iii. Search b. Disadvantages i. Differences in rendering engines 1. MathML 2/MathML 3 support 2. General differences (e.g. stretchy arc in MathJax vs MathFlow) ii. Authoring may require training c. MathML specialization in DITA 1.3 3. Equation specialization in DITA 1.3 a. Block vs. inline b. Figure c. Equation numbering 4. MathML output a. XSL-FO: Antenna House b. HTML: MathJax c. Independent rendering engines i. jEuclid ii. MathFlow 5. Conclusion I will probably mention Eliot Kimber’s DITA for Publishers somewhere in the MathML output section. I’m not yet certain how that whole section will play out. I do want to give an overview of the state of MathML output today with comments about expectations for future developments. And then I have a few questions of my own: Do you have a word count limit in mind for this paper? What format do you need me to submit it in? I imagine I will need to include rendered equations in the paper to demonstrate some of the concepts (such as block vs. inline display styles). Should these be included as a particular image format? Also, if you can give me a hard deadline, that will really help me to schedule the authoring of this paper. Looking forward to hearing your feedback. If we could have it to review on the 6th, that would probably work best for everyone. JoAnn JoAnn T. How about I get you the outline by Nov. 7 so that you can discuss with the subcommittee on your next phone call? Or would it be better to finish it earlier in the week so that they have time to review before the meeting. Best wishes, Autumn From: Stan Doherty [mailto:] Sent: Sunday, October 26, 2014 1:56 PM To: Autumn Cuellar Cc: Doherty, Stan; Hackos, JoAnn Subject: Autumn - - Checking in on your MathML DITA 1.3 Whitepaper Hi Autumn -- Every few weeks the DITA TechComm subcommittee checks in with all the folks doing research and writing. The TechComm SC is meeting tomorrow . . . any status that you're able to share on your whitepaper? anything we can do to assist? We meet every other Monday at 12:00PM/EST . . . if it's easier to check in live on the phone, you are always welcome to do that. :-) Stan Stanley Doherty, Ph.D. Member - OASIS DITA Technical Committee ModularWriting.com
