As mentioned in 1. in my message, the reason I'm (mis)using arch
instead of role, was that I already used role in <emphasis> to
indicate a bold face font there, and I had problems profiling in such
a way that the <emphasis> element were untouched by a profiling for
HTML and PDF, so I took the simple way out and used the arch
attribute for the latter.

But I guess with your approach I won't have to profile at all.  Though
copying entire templates into the customization layer seems a bit
drastic, as well as possibly losing upgrades/conflicting with upgrades
to the DocBook XSL stylesheets.
