Maybe you can try jedit : http://www.jedit.org/
With jedit, you can put this in your header :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="iso-8859-1"?>
<!-- jEdit buffer-local properties: -->
<!-- :xml.root=yourdocument.xml: -->
