whitespace handling in manpages stylesheet

Hi,

Are there any parameters that control how whitespace in handled in the
production of function synopses in manpages? The default stylesheet
produces big gaps (for instance, between the function name and opening
bracket) unless I pull the entire funcdef onto one line and eliminate
spaces between tags and content. Similarly for paramdefs.

Is there any way of avoiding having to edit the docbook?
