But it also depends on what browser you use. Some 
browsers limit access to local content to security reasons: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Links_to_local_pages_don%27t_work

This should work:

<ulink

The 
  protocol part is file:///

Followed by the UNC name but with the \ 
  change to /

So

//server/share/folder/file.ext

sort of 
  thing.
