space-before question

I want to reduce the spacing between paragraphs, so I tried this in the 
customization layer and it had no effect:

<xsl:param name="body.space-before">50em</xsl:param>

I have also tried:

<xsl:attribute-set name="body.font.properties">

<xsl:attribute-set name="body.properties">

and space-before have no effect.


What am I doing wrong?
