DOCBOOK: markup of hyphen chars

Is there a way to markup the different "hyphen characters" like the
ones we are used to in LaTeX (-, --, ---)?

Though there is currently no support in DSSL or XSL stylesheets
and the corresponding backends, it would be good to be able to
markup these characters.
