DOCBOOK: Is there a way to have a mediaobject for/with SVG?

I like to use SVG (scalable vector graphis) for drawings in Docbook.
Is it possible to have this instead of only images like GIF.

The problem is of course the source of gif pictures often come from
drawing programs.
With SVG you would only have to save one format, that can be
manipulated.
It seems CGM is possible, so why not SVG,
