DOCBOOK: Autonumbering Table Column

Is there a way to autonumber a column in a table without using
<orderedlist continuation=continues> or spanning?
 
i am looking for results like this
 
col1    col2
1        xxxx
2        yyyyy
3        zzzz
...
 
I am using CALS.  I am hoping someone has come across this problem
before.
