ISTM that what you describe is exactly a footnote.  How is an annotation
different from a footnote?  Isn't a footnote used to annotate things?
The term "footnote" is derived from the world of paginated output, but the
formatting possibilities you describe merely seem to be more modern
variants of "footnotes" in hypertext display.
