figures caption position

Hi all,
is there a way to decide the position where a caption will be rendered??
I tried (based on the info from
http://www.docbook.org/tdg/en/html/caption.html)
to use a <caption align="left"> tag, but it is refused by jade stating:
there is no attribute "ALIGN".

What I would like to obtain is a figure with it's description on its
side.

Any idea on what I am missing???
