Media Feed system was a great success again this election. A big thanks to
yourself and the rest of the technical committee. EML is a fantastic standard
and has been the cornerstone of our data provision to the Australian media since
2007.

for the update on EML 6.0, as long as we don’t have to run another
election in a few weeks, we will look to upgrade in the very near future.

Don’t know if you’ve
picked up on it yet but we have now finalised and approved EML v6 and
it’s available at the link on our website www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc
home.php?wg_abbrev=election .  If you need any help in understanding
it and the new tools that come with it then please have a word with my
colleague David Webber.

 

Hope your use of v5 in the
recent elections went well and wasn’t the cause of the hung
parliament.   I assume it was because you want to show us Brits how to
run a coalition government …-)

Thanks
for the prompt reply, it was very helpful. We have an “election
readiness” deadline of June 30, where all our EML related code goes into
lock-down. So based on the timings you provided I think we are going to miss v6
by just a few weeks, such is life. So our plan now is to immediately upgrade to
v5 for the upcoming election and look at v6 after the election.

again, EML is a great standard, our Media partners have really embraced it here
in Australia during the 2007 Federal Election. As time goes on I am sure we
will find more and more applications for the standard within the AEC.

Hi Stewart,

 

Great to hear of your continued
interest in EML.  We are in the process of dealing with a number of
changes as a result of our Public Consultation phase of EML v6 and my
colleague  David Webber hopes to have those finished in the next couple of
weeks.  Then we have to have a further Public Review of those changes and
assuming there are no other comments raised we can proceed to formal approval
of v6.  My best guess is that we should get to an OASIS approved standard
status within the next 3 months max.  But clearly you could start your
migration to v6 well before that and David can guide you through what’s
new and how this impacts on where you are at present.  Please feel free to
talk to him direct over your upgrade.

 

Just a personal observation, EML
has moved on considerably since v4 so you would do well to make the
upgrade.   V4 was probably a good beta version but v5 and now v6 have
made it a much more robust and in v6 we now have a  number of tools that
help with the deployment.

The
Australian Electoral Commission has been using EML v4.0 in our “Media
Feed” election results system since February 2006. We are just about to
undertake some work on the system in preparation for our up-coming federal
election. One of the tasks in this project involves investigating the
feasibility of upgrading to the most recent version of the EML standard. I was
wondering if there is an expected release date for the EML v6.0 standard?
