I totally agree that "elements which may only occur once inside a
document" is a little bit confusing. I've changed the sentence as
suggested by you, but added a sub sentence conatins examples. The
sentence reads now:
The document content is typically framed by a prelude and epilogue,
which contain additional information for a specific type of document,
like form data or variable declarations.
