programmatic access to odf spreadsheet.

I was asked today if it's possible
to open a MS excel spreadsheet into calc,
save as ods format,
unzip to access the content.xml file - all programmatically.

This due to the fact that they are being asked to convert
thousands per day?

Has anyone done this please?
