Should this be limited to updates? In other words, couldn't an application have a set of terms that it always includes in an index?
As far as ODF-Next, I would like to see a similar mechanism for the recording of metadata. That is when the application sees some term or phrase, create the appropriate RDF based metadata. I think that could prove to be very useful for routine creation of metadata.
Suggest:
"The <text:alphabetical-index-auto-mark-file> element specifies an auto mark file. An auto mark file is a file that defines a list of terms that may be used by implementations as terms marked by alphabetical index marks (see 7.1.7) when a document's index is created or updated.
The format of an index mark file is implementation defined. "
