Well, yes, but see the latest changes for draw:enhanced-path. Which was based on svg:d.
My preference is for using other standards as written save for exception circumstances. Super-setting is a little easier to justify because existing standards may expand to take on additional capabilities. I don't remember seeing any contract to cover a subset of what was originally defined.
