I believe all functions are defined in terms of what the "normally" return; functions can *also* return an Error value. The Error type is not a subtype of the Number type, or vice-versa. Instead, Error and Number are different types (with many different instances); the function definitions explain the conditions under which they return an Error value instead of a value with its "usual" type (such as Number).
