I seem to still be in JIRA login limbo, working on it...

It may be possible to do it this way, but I don't think its desirable. It opens up the possibility that one signature is valid and the other is not. Or a legacy app might have updated the signature in some way (e.g., add a timestamp), so that one evaluates differently than the other. Trying to communicate that sort of state to the user poses serious difficulties.

It is possible to have it both ways and preserve legacy compatibility.

producers : should write the preferred name, but may write the legacy name.  (Might also write both)

consumers: shall check for the preferred name first and use that if it exists, otherwise look for the legacy name

But not sure this is worth the increased complexity.
