It seems to me that the primary desire of the request In OOo's bugzilla is for a fast way of adding subtotal rows (ie. not to have manually specify all subtotal formulas and their ranges). I don't see how this is a file format issue, Implementations are free to provide any form of interface to create sheet formulas.
