The difference betweeen <text:s/> and &nbsp; is that &nbsp; is a non-breaking space. "Hello&nbsp;world!" and "Hello<text:s/>world!" can be layed out differently. "Hello&#20;world;" and "Hello<text:s/>world!" render the same.
