What does <NameIDFormat> mean in SP metadata

Hi,

I know that in IdP metadata, a list of <NameIDFormat> means a list of different type of values that IdP is able to return to represent the principal.

But can you tell me what does <NameIDFormat> mean inside an SP metadata?
