I would recommend you check out Google's Web APIs [1]. Excerpt from FAQ:

"How does the Google Web APIs service work?: Developers write software
programs that connect remotely to the Google Web APIs service.
Communication is performed via the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP),
an XML-based mechanism for exchanging typed information."

I've also referenced some excellent XML.com articles on various aspects
of using this API, from Python implementations [2], to the Google
developer's kit's WSDL description [3], to a suggested HTTP version of
the Google API [4].
