Joseph,  XPaths are restricted in XML Schema:

Path   ::=   ('.//')? ( Step '/' )* ( Step | '@' NameTest )

Step   ::=   '.' | NameTest

NameTest   ::=   QName | '*' | NCName ':' '*'

The only ORs I see here are the BNF ORs.
