Thanks to everyone who responded.

Thansk Peter for turning me on to nested sets. And thanks Jim for 
steering me to eXist.

I ran some examples using nested sets on MySQL and running eXist -- 
really like eXist. Learning XQuery, XPath 2.0 and XUpdate is more in 
line with my skill set.
