Many of the existing settings are historical and go all the way
back to the previous maintainer.

I long ago gave up on making aesthetic stylesheet changes. There
are just too many people using them. My guiding principle now is
that I only make changes to the stylesheets that change the
formatting of existing documents in the pursuit of bugs.
