One indirect way is to process the files into HTML, and
then use one of the text-based browsers to capture
the formatted text.  My favorite right now is
"links", available from http://links.sourceforge.net.
In the File menu there is a "Save formatted document"
option that does what you want, or use
"links -dump http://etc"  and redirect the output to a file.
It even does tables.
