Comment on the PU1 proposal.
I'm against this. One of the nice aspects of MQTT is its simple straightforward approach. I love $SYS, and I love that I can type it into any subscription client on any command line on any OS without worrying about how Unicode is represented.
I think the concerns you have about bridging into other protocols are over cautious. Anyone dealing with an existing broker already has to deal with the fact that $SYS is special cased. The proposal to put $ into the spec as a reservation means that this is formalized.
