The term scatter plot is a touch misleading. Most spreadsheets use line plots for evenly spaced x values. So if you have a collection of order data points (x_i,y_i) where the x_i are not evenly spaced you use a "scatter plot". In that case it still makes sense to want to have the points connected in order.
Oh and I should have not glossed over the fact that I do know an implementation using Beziers for interpolation, namely Gnumeric. But we have 11 different interpolation types.
