Eeks.  I worry about readability.  But we've already lost some readability by throwing out '<'.  I like the simplicity, and it intuitively follows from having to escape '<'.

Could minimize user confusion: "But the text already contains 'x > y', so I don't understand why 'x < y' doesn't work."

I'll sign up for this approach.
