Errrm..no.  The idea of the virtual machine had been around for some 
time before Java was implemented.  That has been brought up in several 
forums.  Java is as much a trademark as anything else.

XML is not an invention.  It is a specification which originates in the 
intellectual property of ISO 8879, and prior to that, in efforts of 
individual groups to solve problems with interoperable publishing
formats. 
That is why XML is referred to as a subset and not an application of 
SGML.

You'll also find that some SGML systems documented their required tags 
in instance format, not DTDs, so even the schemas have prior art.
