And let us remember the brief flurry of interest last year when it turned
out that Microsoft (apparently not the IE guys, who were convincingly
baffled) was granted a patent more or less on the notion of stylesheets.
Totally ridiculous given the prior art, and after a couple of ill-conceived
and quickly-forgotten PR miscues, MS wisely let the silly thing die a 
quiet and merciful death; this should serve as an example to the rest of
the industry. 

Just recently Yahoo got a patent on the notion of serving web pages
by caching data in memory and using it to fill templates at run-time.

My brother is an industrial designer, and co-holder of a patent for an
ingenious doohickey that mixes gas samples quickly and efficiently in
support of gas-chromatograph applications.  You should have seen the
work they had to do to get it.  A different universe...
