Isn't solving the interoperability problem what ISO/IEC 11179 (international
standard for metadata registries) is all about?
ISO/IEC 11179 - Specification and Standardization of Data Elements.
draft ISO/IEC 11179-1 - Framework for the Specification and Standardization
of Data Elements
draft ISO/IEC 11179-2 - Classification for Data Elements
draft ISO/IEC 11179-3 - Basic Attributes of Data Elements
draft ISO/IEC 11179-4 - Rules and Guidelines for the Formulation of Data
Definitions
draft ISO/IEC 11179-5 - Naming and Identification Principles for Data
Elements
draft ISO/IEC 11179-6 - Registration of Data Elements
Implementations of ISO/IEC 11179 metadata repositories
- Environmental Data Registry (EDR), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
- National Health Information Knowledgebase (NHIK), Australian Institute of
Health and Welfare
- United States Health Information Knowledgebase (USHIK)
- Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), Dept. of Transportation's ITS
registry standards
- Basic Semantic Repository (BSR) for electronic data interchange (EDI)
transactions.
Here is the the ISO/IEC Web site for the group working on the data
interchange standard
http://bwonotes5.wdc.pnl.gov/SC32/JTC1SC32.nsf
and the Metadata Working Group site
http://metadata.aihw.gov.au/
Did anyone from XML-land (W3C, Oasis, ebXML, BizTalk) go to the recent Open
Forum on Metadata Registries (January 17-20)?
