EXPAT and Entities

I'm using expat C library to parse some xml documents.
It works for me, but it presents an error when it encounters a predefined
XML internal entity,
such as: < or >

Does anybody know of a way to configure the XML_parser so that it honors
the built in entities?

Thanks
