There have several announcements of XML technology recently from commercial
organisations

I take this opportunity to thank all companies who make technology
available that helps in the development of the XML effort. We have had a
sensational amount of this during the 3 years of XML-DEV and without it we
would be a long way behind. I also am personally gratified to see the
growing trend to OpenSource which I am convinced makes good sense in many
cases. But many non-Open products are still very useful.

It would help if contributors gave a *brief* statement of the conditions of
use, and the environment, so that readers know whether it is worth visiting
the site. Examples might be:

FooView:
Platform: any Java-enabled browser
Language: Java Applet
License: OpenSource (GPL)

BarParse:
Platform: any Windows (98/95/NT)
Language: C++
License: Commercial product, free for personal and academic use

PlughStyle:
Platform: Mac
Language: C
License: Commercial, free 30-day trial

We ask vendors to be cooperative in not posting marketing material to
XML-DEV and their restraint has been excellent. Our (partially written)
rule is that commercial products should only be posted here if they fill a
technology gap and the posting is in response to other postings. If the
product is mentioned casually it may be useful to highlight that it is a
commercial product, e.g.

Alice asked:
"How can I do foo to my XML files?"

Bob.com replies
"FooXML [commercial product] can do foo..."

This saves poor academics like me rushing off to the website...
