Another commonly-recommended approach is to Base64-encode the
character content, then tack on a sentinel attribute to the parent
element. Your consuming application then watches for this attribute
(you can limit the check to certain elements if you like) and decodes
any character content within such a marked element. It gets sticky
with mixed content, but we usually avoid that situation anyway.
There was even a brief discussion here about a "standard" attribute
("packed" or something?) that would indicate such an encoding, but
again I think it got dropped.
