I'm coming in late and have already let part of the thread pass by, so 
apologies if someone's already mentioned this.

In the Unix world, the spreadsheets for both KDE and Gnome use
XML-based save formats (in fact, most Gnome programs use XML save
formats).  Here are the relevant home pages:

  http://www.gnome.org/gnome-office/gnumeric.shtml

I'm not sure if either project has published a proper description of
its XML format yet, so you might have to read the source code.

Yes, I know that it must look silly to non-Linux types that two
open-source spreadsheets use two different XML-based save formats (and
I've posted a comment on that point before), but think of it in Monty
Python terms: if Microsoft is the Romans, then KDE and Gnome are the
Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea (not necessarily
in that order).
