I also assume they will do both things you mention 
(upgrade and make it compatible with DR) and 
technically, this can be handled.  The problem is 
in introducing the technology to markets and vendors that 
aren't familiar with it and using it as a contract 
vehicle.  Explaining to them that that was then 
and this is now is always a chore. "But you said..."

<whine>This is the familiar chasm for early 
adopters and mainstream users.  I am hoping for  
sooner-than-later support to avoid climbing a wall 
on the other side of the chasm while escaping 
the arrow-enabled natives on this side.</whine>

You know, I admit i've been in a hole writing my book for a few months,
so maybe microsoft has made some kind of retraction I missed, but it was
my understanding that microsoft was going to implement and support the
W3C XML Schema language as soon as it was complete.
