Short answer per "Understanding Active-X and OLE", David
Chappell, Microsoft Press; pp 72-73:
"Packaging a call's parameters into a standard format
for transmission is called marshalling. The reverse
operation, unpackaging from the standard format into
a format appropriate for the receiving process is
called unmarshalling. Code that knows how to perform
these operations is generically referred to as
marshalling code, ro for shart, a marshaler. Ther
primary purpose of proxies and stubs is to perform
marshalling and unmarshalling as needed."
