NSUML (http://nsuml.sourceforge.net) is a XMI 1.3 library in Java which is used by ArgoUML (http://www.argouml.org), an open-source UML tool in Java. Most discussion on NSUML occurs on the ArgoUML
developers list. If you want to get deep with ArgoUML, check out the argouml/src_new module from the CVS. We have a lot of cool things in the code now that are not reflected in the last dot release.
IBM Alphaworks (http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com) provides an XMI toolkit, but it is not open source.
There is a log of the discussions on the xmi mailing list on the incompatibilities of the various XMI implementations at http://home.houston.rr.com/curta/xmithread/index.html
