Re: patient info schema

There are (at least) two standards organizations developing XML DTDs for
healthcare information, the ASTM's XML Healthcare subcommittee
(http://www.astm.org) and HL7 (http://www.hl7.org). These standards efforts
are being coordinated using an interoperable clinical header. HL7 has
traditionally focussed on interapplication messaging protocols whereas ASTM
has traditionally focused on documentation.

The ASTM architecture defines a common clinical document format containing a
clinical header and body. The body content models generally specify text
(#PCDATA), XHTML Basic content (%Flow.mix) or reference external documents
using XLinks.

http://www.openhealth.org/ASTM/ contains a number of documents and DTDs
related to the recent E31.25 draft ballot. The XChart application implements
the 2001-2-18 draft ballot ASTM standard internally (though the web based
demo displays documents as XHTML) -- this is to be released as open source
once we can package the 2001-2-18 mods for distribution.

We expect that future versions of this standard will specify XML Schema --
which is what you did ask about -- as well as other *standardized* schemata.
