It's not that they are in Italian but that they are (I would guess) in
latin 1 encoding. You have specified that they are in UTF-8 (which can
also be used to encode Italian, and any other Unicode strings). If you
want to keep your file in latin1 then you want encoding = "iso-8859-1"
