No, Emacs most certainly does accept all three line ending
conventions. I just tested it one more time and it had no trouble
whatsoever recognizing DOS and Mac files. It even put a little "DOS"
or "Mac" in the status bar to indicate what line ending convention
was being used.
I don't normally use vi, so I hadn't tested it before but I just did
and it transparently recognized the DOS file. It could not handle the
Mac file and displayed the the \r's as ^M. It couldn't handle NEL
either. Thise it displayed as ~E. I'm not sure what that means.
