Since you mention "religious war" and "out-of-band", there is an out of
band mechanism for XML 1.0 that's called... PIs and would be perfect for
this usage!
And what is you type information is it's not a *Processing Instruction* ?
It's the only way I can think of which wouldn't break existing
applications and could let us qualify the attributes as well.
